How Do Solar PV Cells Work?

Imagine turning sunlight into electricity – that’s exactly what solar photovoltaic (PV) cells do! When the sun shines on these cells, it creates an electric field across the silicon layers, generating direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is then converted to alternating current (AC) electricity, which powers your buildings or gets exported to the grid. It’s a seamless way to harness the sun’s energy and put it to good use.

VAT Refund for Farmers:
Great news for farmers when you obtain a Teagasc Grant in Sligo! Since January 1, 2012, flat-rate farmers can reclaim VAT on solar PV systems primarily used for their farming business. Just make sure your system is listed on the Triple E Product Register maintained by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). You can check the register on SEAI’s website and use the VAT 58 form for your claim through the Revenue Commissioners.

Finding the Perfect Spot for Your Solar PV System:
The placement of your solar panels is crucial for getting the most out of them. Solar energy is measured in kilowatt-hours per square meter per year (kWh/m²/year). Ideally, you want your panels on a large, south-facing roof or in an open field. While some systems can track the sun throughout the day, a traditional roof with a pitch angle up to 35° works great too. Just make sure to avoid shading from trees, chimneys, or other buildings to maximise efficiency.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

In many cases, installing solar panels doesn’t require planning permission:

  • Agricultural Structures: You’re good to go if the panels are within the curtilage of your farm.
  • Residential Properties: No need for permission if the panels are within your house’s curtilage.
For ground-mounted arrays, keep the array under 25m² and the height below two meters. Roof-mounted panels shouldn’t exceed 50m² or 50% of the total roof area and must be at least 50cm from the roof or wall edges. If you’re dealing with buildings with conservation status or larger ground installations, you’ll need planning permission. When in doubt, it’s best to check with your local planning officer.

TAMS Support for Farmers
Farmers, there’s more good news! The Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) offers substantial support for solar PV investments. Eligible farmers can get a 40% grant, with young qualified farmers receiving up to 60%. TAMS covers up to 11kW for dairy, beef, tillage, and sheep farms, plus additional support for the pig and poultry sectors. Make sure your installer is approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), and check all insurances, technology datasheets, and warranties.

  • Making Money with Solar PV thanks to Teagasc Grants in Sligo:  Solar PV panels are a great investment. After the initial purchase, maintenance and operating costs are low – just clean the panels and inverters every 10 years or so. Expect a slight decrease in output (around 1% per year), but the financial returns are impressive. While Ireland doesn’t currently offer a Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (REFIT) for solar PV, you can save significantly by using the energy you produce and reducing your electricity bills. If you generate more energy than you use, it can be exported to the grid, and you might earn money once a feed-in tariff system is introduced. Larger systems require metering and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with an electricity supply company.
  • Connecting to the Grid: For systems up to 16 amps per phase (3.68kW single phase and 11.04kW three phase), no prior permission is needed to connect to the grid. Simply fill out form NC6 and submit it to ESB Networks. Larger systems require pre-approval and form NC5 for exporting systems.

Boosting Your Solar PV Performance

Solar PV systems shine brightest when used in properties with high daytime energy usage, especially from April to September. For example, a 4kW system on a south-facing roof in Carlow can generate about 3,300kWh annually, enough for a small household. Larger systems, like a 50kW setup on a farm, can generate around 41,500kWh and require 350-400m² of roof space or a third of an acre for ground-mounted installations.
